Clay Pigeon Shooting Is A
Thrilling Type of Target Shooting
There are different reasons for firing at clay targets. It's good practice
for shooting real birds, it's a competitive sport and it's fun just to do it
for its own sake. Clay Pigeon Shooting uses a shotgun, with lead or steel
pellets, or a spitball. The trap releases the targets, which are normally
made from chalk and pitch. This is a material that stands up to being fired
speedily through the air but will break on contact with a shotgun being
fired.
The traps fire the targets one by one or in pairs and there are manual
versions and automated ones, some holding as many as 600 targets. The more
expensive ones can be operated by remote control or by voice activation.
Targets can be altered to different speeds and angle of trajectory,
according to the requirements of the shooter. In Clay Pigeon Shooting, there
is the chance to experiment with different equipment.
The targets are most commonly black but other colors such as yellow, white
or fluorescent orange are used sometimes, if the backdrop requires it or if
the light is fading. They also come in different sizes and density. The
Standard is the one most used with the Midi being smaller and the Mini being
smaller still. The Battue is thinner and flatter and designed to fly faster
than the average target. The Rabbit is standard size but flatter and
thicker. For an extra challenge, shooters like to use the ZZ, a standard
size made from plastic and designed to fly in an unpredictable zig zag
fashion.
The sport has different variations with different sets of rules applied. The
most popular is Sporting Clays, which developed in England. The United
States originated Skeet Shooting, a type of Clay Pigeon Shooting that
incorporates English Skeet, American Skeet and Olympic Skeet. Another
version is called Trap Shooting. A fun sport, that can involve children and
beginners, is Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting. This uses shotguns that have been
adapted with laser equipment, a safer option and one that can be done
indoors. The rules of ordinary clay shooting otherwise apply.
This popular sport used to be exclusively in the hands of the wealthy,
hunting crowd but clubs have sprung up, allowing everyday people to have a
go. It's the perfect hobby for people who aren't comfortable using live
firearms or killing actual wildlife but enjoy the thrill of target shooting.
It's beneficial to other aspects of life too, as it sharpens the reflexes.
