Collect Memories With A Baseball Card Collection
Collecting baseball cards is one of those things
that either you get or you do not. My girlfriend, for example, thinks that
baseball card collectors are weird. She has never understood my baseball card
collection, and has never tried that hard to. She cannot understand why I would
collect cards with players names on them. She is one of those people who likes
sports, but hates sports fans. She likes baseball, but can't stand baseball card
collections.
In a certain way, I understand where she is coming from. If I hadn't been
collecting baseball cards since I was a little boy, I would not see the point to
it. You see, a baseball card collection is about more than the cards. It is
about the greatest of American sports. It is about growing up, about your
relationship with your father and your friends, and about the dreams that you
would one day become a star.
When I look at my baseball card collection, I do not see a bunch of individual
baseball cards. I see memories. I remember trying out for the Little League team
when I was a little guy, and being so overjoyed when I finally made it. I
remember the first time that I ever went to the baseball game with my father, or
some of the games that I bet on in college. My baseball card collection contains
all of these memories and more. That is why it is so important to me.
My cousins kids are not allowed to have baseball card collections, and I can see
how much it hurts them. They are a pretty anti-consumerist family. They do not
make a lot of money, and believe in spending it only on important matters. I can
see the soundness of this argument. I grew up in a pretty thrifty household
myself, but my father always made an exception for the baseball card collection.
You see, there are some luxuries that are worth having. For some people, it is
getting to take a trip to a resort every once in a while. For others, it can be
going out on a date night every Friday. For me, it is the baseball card
collection. It is a way of participating, of feeling like you are a part of the
game. That, after all, is the whole thrill of it. If you identify with the team,
it's wins and losses become important to you.
